A friend asked me a question over coffee—what is culture to you?
It seems like a simple question, right? But I was kind of speechless & fumbled together some I-hope-this-will-satisfy answer that I honestly don’t remember now. So later that night I asked myself the same question again—what does culture mean to me?
2 words came immediately to my mind: fostering community.
It’s the home place where you kick off your shoes & hang up your hat—Full of passion, heritage, heart, & soul.
Community culture goes hand in hand with company culture. Without passion & soul, the community ceases to exist. Community without depth is not authentic community at all, just as business without goals & missions is not truly a purposeful company. The secret sauce to success goes far beyond a catchy name & cool logo–it extends inward & downward at the roots: it all begins & ends with the person behind the company. Yes, I dare say the business owner is the secret sauce in a business recipe. What else is in the sauce? I think it boils down to one major ingredient: love. And not just love for the company or products, but love for others, & a deep desire to serve & to be a light in a dark world.
The core of creating genuine culture is loving your neighbor–those people around you who make your every day go round–the mailman, teacher, pizza delivery kid, bus driver, best friend from down the street. All of these people contribute to the community in which we live & work. Spreading kindness around like confetti doesn’t work unless we do. It’s not always easy, but the calling is well worth it. When community is a place rooted in love, it becomes a place of peaceful acceptance, understanding, & joy to welcome with open arms. If community is love, then it loves all things, bears all things, & remains steadfast in all things. It gives grace & forgiveness. It’s a place people feel comfortable to come inside, kick off their shoes, & stay a while. A place where God’s Word moves & changes hearts. A place that seeks to further His kingdom one house at a time. A starting place for every journey big & small.
I want my company to be a place of community–one people feel welcome, wanted, & comfortable enough to come & be themselves. A place of invitation, communion, kindness, & authenticity. One that reflects the Gospel & trusts God is every step. One that steps out in boldness from Christ. One that is open to always learning new things & meeting new people.
I believe communion with God spurs community. Coming together in fellowship invites God into our space.
“Where 2 or more gather together in my name, I am with them.” -Matthew 18:20
Pioneers aren’t meant to wander through life alone. God sends us people to help us embrace the journey through all the hills & valleys–to support each other as community, as neighbors, as brothers & sisters in Christ. He invites us into an inheritance–an eternal community in heaven. What if we could experience a piece of that here & now? Friends, it all starts with loving thy neighbor.
I challenge you. Let’s embrace neighborhood, an all-encompassing brotherhood & sisterhood, together! Homes are the hearts of neighborhoods & I’ve always a fascination with them because each house has a unique story to tell.
I’m a visual person, so I’ve found I see life in a very tangible way by drawing. The houses in my community, imagination, & beyond are such a fun way for me to experience & share this gift of community. So here we go! A new community collection in Ashley Ink & Paperie is being built (!!!)—check out the NEW “love thy neighbor” print on the Etsy shop HERE! Stay tuned for more community drawings (like the Bham one in this post) coming oh so soon.
